Macie Monday

A cute memory from 7 years ago, shortly after Jasper came home.  Macie was such a good big sister (even though she did hog the stick!)

She ate most of her breakfast this morning, and is down 2cm.  We’ve got an appointment with the vet at 4pm to see if there’s any more we can do to get her ascites (bloating) under control, and figure out next steps.

7:15pm edit

Hi everyone, just wanted to give an update after Macie's visit to the vet today.

The GOOD news is, they did another blood test, and her liver & protein levels are definitely heading in the right direction, so YAY!!!

The bad news is, the vet has no idea why the anaemia is still so bad.  It shouldn't be, and she's afraid it might be a sign that there's another issue that hasn't been detected yet (such as a sneaky cancer).  There's no blood in her urine or poop, her abdomen was full of water with no sign of blood, so... where are all the red blood cells going?!?  Also concerning is the loss of muscle mass.  (I had to help her get into the foot well of the back seat today – she tried jumping out herself when we got back home, but fell on her face.)

The good news for Macie is that she was the last appointment of the day, and they had an open can of food, so she got to finish it.  This dog is spoiled.

The vet is going to send the details down to the specialist to see what he thinks and what tests might give us more answers, and I'm going to monitor Macie for the next couple of days, and probably have another appointment at the end of the week.  She said we could send Macie to a Toronto hospital for a blood transfusion, but without knowing what's underlying the anaemia, we're just buying time.  So I need to do some thinking about what I want to put her through, for an unknown amount of time bought.  Considering how badly the sedation knocked her out the last 2 times, I don't really want to put her body/liver through that again.  But if there's something less invasive, it might be worth a shot.

Juggling a whole bunch of uncertainty, while clinging to the good news about her liver.

11:30pm edit

Also, I opened a bottle of non-alcoholic wine, and it's fucking gawdawful.  Can they not make an alcohol-free wine that tastes REMOTELY like wine?!?!?!?
